Jacksonville State suffered a heart-wrenching double-overtime loss to Eastern Michigan, falling to 0-3 for the first time since 2005. Despite a late-game comeback led by quarterback Tyler Huff and kicker Garrison Rippa, crucial mistakes cost the Gamecocks the win.
Coach Rich Rodriguez acknowledged the team’s need to play both hard and smart, as errors proved costly in the game. Although Jax State showed improvement in the second half, Rodriguez described the first half as “gross” and highlighted the team’s struggles in short yardage situations.
Huff put up an impressive performance, throwing for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 80 yards. Receiver Cam Vaughn stood out with six catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, while Tre Stewart led the rushing attack with 53 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Fred Perry led the team with 19 tackles, including a tackle for loss and half a sack. Despite the loss, kicker Garrison Rippa had a standout game, hitting four field goals including a 51-yarder.
Looking ahead, Jacksonville State will aim to secure their first win of the season as they face Southern Mississippi at AmFirst Stadium on Saturday. The team will look to build on their strong performances and avoid costly mistakes in order to come out on top against their upcoming opponent.
