IAEA Director General Explores Cancer Treatment Innovations in Italy
During his recent visit to Italy, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the critical role of health in the agency’s initiatives. At the National Cancer Institute in Milan, Italy’s pioneering facility for cancer research and treatment, Grossi highlighted its reputation as "a beacon of quality in the field." The IAEA is actively seeking to enhance collaboration with the institute, particularly through the Rays of Hope initiative, aimed at improving cancer care accessibility for underserved populations.
Grossi’s itinerary also included a tour of the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) in Pavia, renowned for treating radio-resistant and inoperable tumors using advanced hadrontherapy. This innovative method employs charged particles for radiotherapy, significantly minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. CNAO is among a select few institutions globally utilizing this cutting-edge technology.
In a statement, CNAO President Gianluca Vago underlined the importance of cultivating a positive culture around nuclear energy, emphasizing the center’s ongoing efforts to democratize knowledge about the clinical applications of atomic particles. Vago expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations within the international IAEA network, reinforcing CNAO’s commitment to educational and training initiatives that promote understanding of nuclear applications in healthcare.
As global health priorities continue to evolve, the IAEA’s partnerships with leading institutions like the National Cancer Institute and CNAO are pivotal in advancing cancer treatment methodologies and ensuring that those in need have greater access to vital care. This visit marks a significant step toward reinforcing international cooperation in the fight against cancer.
