Pirates GM Speaks on Trade Rumors Surrounding Ace Paul Skenes

The Pittsburgh Pirates are struggling in last place, facing numerous challenges, including a managerial change and ongoing public relations issues. However, trading their promising ace, Paul Skenes, is not an option according to General Manager Ben Cherington. Despite being 11 games out of playoff contention, Skenes remains a key asset for the Pirates, particularly given his status as the reigning National League Rookie of the Year and his long-term team control.

Entering a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pirates’ offense has been dismal, ranking last in several key offensive categories. Although they recently managed to score five runs in an 8-5 loss—the first time in 27 games they’ve reached that mark—they still struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving ten runners on base. This inability to perform at the plate has been a significant factor in the team’s poor performance, leading to a 3-5 record in Skenes’ starts this season.

Cherington acknowledges the need for improvement, especially in run production, and while pitching has shown promise, the lineup lacks depth beyond a few key players. The Pirates have a solid crop of pitching prospects but are lacking impactful position players. High draft picks like catcher Henry Davis and second baseman Nick Gonzales have yet to make a significant impact.

Looking ahead, Cherington remains optimistic about the potential for improvement over the remainder of the season, emphasizing the importance of playing better baseball and the hope that the team can turn things around as they progress through the summer.
