Government Technology Honors California’s Innovators at Annual Awards
Sacramento, CA – The Government Innovation Summit celebrated the Best of California awards on Wednesday, recognizing excellence across various departments and initiatives aimed at enhancing public service and operational efficiency.
The awards highlighted significant achievements in collaboration, workforce initiatives, customer experience, data innovation, and more. Notably, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) teamed up with the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) to modernize the state’s hiring through a secure API, paving the way for more efficient HR practices.
In response to last year’s devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, the California Department of Technology (CDT) and the Office of Data and Innovation launched the CA.gov fire portal, serving as a crucial resource for affected families and setting a precedent for future emergency responses. Additionally, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and CDT’s Critical Services Team were recognized for creating a centralized position control system, expected to reduce appointment wait times significantly from one hour to just 10 minutes.
The Best Workforce Initiative award went to CALFIRE for its recruitment platform, JoinCALFIRE.com, enhancing candidate experiences while reducing staff workload. Acknowledgment also went to the Employment Development Department (EDD) for its Plain Language Initiative, which improved accessibility to unemployment benefits for non-English speakers.
Excellence in customer experience was apparent in CALFIRE’s new Fire.CA.gov website, integrating essential resources during fire emergencies. The DMV’s MyDMV platform, providing personalized access to vehicle services, was also recognized.
Christian Beltran, from the Department of Finance, was honored as Innovator of the Year for his leadership on a Gen AI project assessing the fiscal impact of legislative bills.
