University of Alabama Students Empower Underserved Communities through Technology Program
NORTHPORT, Ala. (WBRC) – In a bid to enhance digital literacy among underserved communities, students from the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business are actively engaging residents through the Lift Program. Each Wednesday morning at the Northport Community Center, these students dedicate an hour to assist participants enrolled in the Focus 50 Plus initiative, empowering them to maximize their computer and smartphone use.
During the nine-week program, students address various technological challenges faced by older adults, many of whom may feel apprehensive about using technology. John Patrick Campbell, a student leader of the effort, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Really it’s just helping them with their technological needs. A lot of people are scared of technology and may hesitate to ask for help.”
The program not only serves to bridge the digital divide but also fosters meaningful connections between generations. Campbell emphasized the invaluable exchange of life experiences, noting that such interactions offer tremendous personal growth for both the students and the participants.
The Lift Program is provided as a free service, aiming to enhance accessibility to technology within the community. Interested individuals can learn more about the services and see if similar programs are available in their area by visiting ua.edu.
