In April 1969, Cher arrived at Muscle Shoals Sound to record her first solo album. Despite her fame, the musicians there didn’t recognize her at first. The album was the first ever recorded at the studio, established by the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section – The Swampers. The legendary Cher was known for her impact and talent, rather than her height, as she stood alongside her then-husband Sonny Bono in photos. She transitioned from a pop duo to a solo artist with the help of Atlanta Records executive/music producer Jerry Wexler, who played a key role in bringing artists to record at Muscle Shoals.
Cher’s album featured covers of songs by Bob Dylan and Otis Redding, reflecting the changing music landscape from pop to bluesier, edgier sounds. Despite Wexler falling ill, the album was completed with the help of other renowned producers and musicians. The album, titled “3614 Jackson Highway,” gave Muscle Shoals Sound industry credibility and set the stage for future hits. Cher’s later hits like “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Believe” solidified her status as a solo star.
The album may not have been a commercial success, but it was a critical step in transitioning Cher from a duo partner to solo star. Recently, Cherilyn Sarkisian was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing her legendary career and significant impact on the music industry. The album remains an important milestone in the history of Muscle Shoals Sound and the artists who recorded there.
