Cam Newton Advocates for Power 4 Teams in College Football Playoff
Former Auburn and NFL quarterback Cam Newton has voiced his strong opinions on the College Football Playoff (CFP), emphasizing that he believes only Power 4 teams deserve a shot at the championship. During an appearance on ESPN’s "Get Up," Newton declared, “Understand your weight class,” critiquing the inclusion of non-Power 4 conference teams in the playoff conversation.
Newton expressed his disdain for teams like SMU, Arizona State, Indiana, and Boise State potentially competing for CFP spots, questioning how they merit consideration over teams like Ole Miss, which faced formidable opponents like Georgia, Kentucky, and Florida. He argued that the overall strength of a team’s schedule should weigh heavily in deciding eligibility for the national championship.
His critique was pointed, stating, “Have you really earned the right to say that, playing the talent you played?” He specifically cited Boise State, indicating skepticism about their ability to compete against top-tier teams, particularly after their performance in past matchups.
Furthermore, Newton dismissed the idea of a rematch of last season’s blowout, where Georgia defeated TCU 65-7. He also reminisced about the 2004 season when USC faced Oklahoma, opining that the Trojans should have played Auburn instead. Newton’s comments come amid increasing discussions about the postseason format and the fairness of including teams from smaller conferences.
As the debate over the future of the CFP continues, Newton’s remarks highlight the ongoing divide between traditional powerhouse programs and those outside the established elite. His passionate stance invites further dialogue on how the playoff system can be shaped to ensure competitiveness and recognition of strength in college football.
