Sen. Katie Britt Reflects on Legislative Achievements in First Year
WASHINGTON — In her first six months representing Alabama in the Senate, junior Sen. Katie Britt has made significant strides in her legislative agenda, notably with the Laken Riley Act, which passed with bipartisan support and became law at the end of January. The act mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes like theft and shoplifting. Britt attributed her success to a solid understanding of the bill and strategic outreach to opposition members across the aisle, leading to twelve Senate Democrats backing the measure.
“Leader Thune said, ‘All right, our first bill out of the gate in this new Congress, to me as a leader, is going to be the Laken Riley Act, Katie, you’re up,’” Britt recalled. The act was the first signed into law by President Trump during his second term, marking a key moment for Britt.
Additionally, Britt has championed child care affordability through collaboration with Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine. Her initiatives culminated in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which expands tax credits for families facing rising child care costs. Despite these advancements, critiques from advocacy groups have emerged, highlighting cuts in Medicaid and food assistance as overshadowing the minor improvements in child care support.
Most recently, Britt’s legislation known as Lulu’s Law, named after a shark attack victim, passed the Senate unanimously. It aims to establish a warning system for shark attacks and awaits a vote in the House. Britt remains optimistic about its passage and anticipates a future signing ceremony alongside Trump.
Reflecting on her achievements, Britt emphasized, “To speak up for parents that are working hard to provide for their families and actually achieve results was a big deal and something I’m very proud of.”
