Senators Britt and Fetterman Push for Mental Health Warning Labels on Social Media
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and John Fetterman (D-Penn.) have reintroduced legislation known as the Stop the Scroll Act, aimed at mandating mental health warning labels on social media platforms. This initiative seeks to highlight the potential negative impacts of social media usage on mental health, particularly among young individuals.
The proposed warning label would appear as soon as users open a social media application, requiring them to acknowledge the message before proceeding. The label would not only inform users of the mental health risks but would also direct them to available mental health resources.
Britt emphasized the importance of equipping individuals with the knowledge and resources to navigate the challenges posed by social media. "This simple solution will help parents and kids thrive," she stated. The initiative is in response to growing concerns surrounding the mental health crisis affecting youth, as echoed by the former U.S. surgeon general in a call for Congress to implement such warning labels.
Fetterman, who has been candid about his struggles with mental health, collaborated with Britt on this bipartisan effort. He expressed a personal commitment to address the dangers of unchecked social media use, citing a rise in addiction, anxiety, depression, and suicide rates linked to these platforms. “As a Senator, but more importantly, as a dad to three young kids, I feel a duty to address how dangerous unchecked social media use can be,” Fetterman said.
The Stop the Scroll Act has been referred to the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, as the senators work together to pass this critical legislation aimed at safeguarding mental well-being in the digital age.
