Emergency Cesarean Birth for Pregnant Woman on Life Support: Family Confirms Baby’s Arrival
Atlanta, GA – The family of Adriana Smith, a pregnant metro Atlanta woman who has been on life support since February, announced that her baby was born via emergency cesarean section. The newborn, named Chance, arrived on Friday and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), weighing approximately 1 pound, 13 ounces.
Smith’s case drew significant media attention last month when her mother, April Newkirk, revealed that the hospital claimed Georgia’s abortion law necessitated keeping Smith on life support due to her pregnancy. Initially, the family intended to maintain this course until the baby was viable. However, they decided to remove Smith from life support on Tuesday following the delivery of her son.
"He’s expected to be okay," Newkirk stated, adding that the family is asking for prayers as Chance begins his fight for health. While family members participated in a private service on Sunday, they did not comment publicly on the baby’s birth, declining additional interviews.
In February, Smith had been admitted to the hospital while nine weeks pregnant after experiencing severe headaches. A day prior, she was sent home from another hospital with medication. Her boyfriend found her in distress the following morning, leading to her hospitalization.
Smith’s situation has reignited discussions surrounding Georgia’s abortion legislation, which, effective since 2022, prohibits most abortions after the detection of fetal cardiac activity—typically around six weeks of pregnancy—without exceptions except in certain specific cases, including risks to the mother’s life.
The family expresses their hope and gratitude as they navigate this challenging time, rallying for support around Chance’s health journey.
