Bessemer City School students take a stand against gun violence by signing a pledge on the National Day of Concern. Martez Sanders, an eighth grader, spoke about the impact of losing his uncle to gun violence, emphasizing the heartbreaking consequences it can have on families. Students listened intently as advocate Jessica Barnes-Brown shared her own story of losing her son to gun violence in 2018. The event aimed to raise awareness of the prevalence of gun violence in Alabama and the devastating impact it has on communities.
Jefferson County alone has recorded 164 homicides this year, with nine of them being children. Despite not being direct victims, many children are still affected by gun violence through the loss or injury of loved ones. The event highlighted the need for young people to play a role in curbing violence and promoting safer communities.
Bessemer District Attorney Lynneice Washington urged students to think twice before resorting to gun violence, emphasizing the power they have to make the right choices. The pledge taken by students commits them to never bringing a gun to school or using it to settle personal disputes, while also encouraging their friends to seek non-violent solutions. By coming together and taking a stand, the hope is to reverse the trend of gun violence and create safer environments for all.
