The Alabama High School Athletic Association has announced that the South Regional basketball tournament will be held at Alabama State for the next three years. This decision was made by AHSAA executive director Alvin Briggs in an effort to reduce travel for schools in Southwest Alabama and increase fan attendance.
The Central Regional tournament will also be hosted in Montgomery at Garrett Coliseum, providing another convenient location for participating schools. The Northeast Regional tournament will continue to take place at Jacksonville State, while the Northwest tournament will remain at Wallace-Hanceville Community College.
Alabama State’s Acadome had previously hosted regionals but opted out following the pandemic. The Central Regional had been held at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham for the past two years, while the South Regional took place at Garrett Coliseum.
ASU athletic director Jason Cable expressed excitement at the opportunity to host the AHSAA tournament on their campus, highlighting the chance to showcase their institution to the local and state community.
The winning teams from each regional tournament will advance to the final four at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena. Overall, this decision is seen as a positive step for the AHSAA, providing convenient and accessible locations for schools and fans alike.
