Auburn sophomore inches closer to PGA Tour membership, just one point away

Auburn sophomore Jackson Koivun is one step away from earning PGA Tour membership through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program after making the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational as the only amateur in the field. Koivun carded even-par 72 in the first two rounds and finished at 6 over for the tournament. With 19 points accumulated so far, Koivun needs just one more point to qualify for PGA Tour membership.

While Koivun plans to focus on helping Auburn defend their NCAA men’s championship this spring, he may have to decide whether to begin his PGA Tour career before his junior season. Despite potential eligibility, Koivun expressed interest in returning to college to further develop his game and adjust mentally for the rigors of the PGA Tour.

Two players have already qualified for PGA Tour membership through the program, with former Mountain Brook High School star Gordon Sargent deferring his membership for further development at Vanderbilt. Luke Clanton of Florida State has also reached 20 points, but his intentions remain undisclosed.

Koivun credited his PGA Tour experience for providing valuable lessons on strategic play, particularly emphasizing the top pros’ exceptional short games. While Koivun did not participate in Auburn’s recent victory in Las Vegas, the team is set to compete in the General Hackler Championship before heading to the SEC Championship in April. As Koivun continues to hone his skills on the course, his potential transition to the PGA Tour remains a topic of interest for golf enthusiasts.
