Autauga County Schools Seek Urgent Solutions Amid Challenges
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Autauga County Schools Superintendent Lyman Woodfin is acutely aware of the pressing challenges confronting the district, where dwindling facilities and increasing competition from private and charter schools threaten to drive families away.
With Alabama lawmakers expanding school choice options that direct public funding towards private education, Woodfin is proposing a transformative partnership model. He is advocating for local governments to contribute towards essential school repairs and new construction, a move he believes is crucial for retaining families and attracting new ones.
"I’m asking for a funding agreement where we pay a portion and the entities pay a portion," Woodfin stated, emphasizing the urgency of renovating aging facilities that risk losing community support. He has presented this idea to local councils, highlighting a collaborative approach to secure funding for a new high school tailored to meet the demands of military families in the Prattville area.
The proposed new high school comes with an estimated price tag of $150 million, while additional schools may be required in other rapidly growing regions, costing up to $160 million. Unfortunately, current state regulations hinder the district from issuing new bonds until 2029, creating a funding bottleneck.
Declining enrollment, down from a peak of 10,000 in 2008 to around 8,700 now, further complicates finances, prompting Woodfin to caution that many families are leaving for districts with better facilities.
With local communities encouraging collaboration, stakeholders acknowledge that the cost of inaction is significant. As superintendent since 2023, Woodfin emphasizes the importance of addressing the school’s pressing needs swiftly, stating, “I can’t afford to wait.” The emphasis is on collective success through improved educational infrastructure for all students in Autauga County.
