Arctic Air Brings Several Freezing Nights and Chilly Days Ahead

Cold Front Hits Alabama on Thanksgiving Day

Alabama residents prepare for a dramatic drop in temperatures this Thanksgiving Day as a cold front, which brought rain and thunderstorms overnight, sweeps through the region. By Friday morning, temperatures are expected to plummet to the 30s, with wind chills dipping into the 20s.

In Birmingham, the day’s temperatures will hover in the upper 40s to lower 50s, characterized by a brisk north wind of 10 to 15 miles per hour. Northern areas, however, will experience chillier conditions, with daytime highs in the 40s and “feels like” temperatures sinking into the mid-30s.

Today’s official high will occur before sunrise, with the temperature forecasted to reach a low just before midnight. The trend of freezing temperatures will intensify on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with morning readings in the lower and middle 30s and chills making it feel colder.

Athletes and fans attending the Iron Bowl on Saturday in Tuscaloosa should be prepared for cold game-time conditions, with kickoff temperatures in the low 50s but expected to fall into the 40s by the end of the game, feeling even colder due to wind chill.

Expect subfreezing temperatures to persist into next week, prompting advisories for residents to protect exposed pipes. While the cold snap may linger, a gradual warm-up is anticipated next week, leading to more typical early December weather, with highs nearing 60 degrees.

Looking ahead, another storm system late next week could bring increased rainfall and potential severe thunderstorms across Alabama and neighboring states for the first weekend of December.
