Tuscaloosa, AL — Sarah Annette Harrison Sanderson, the devoted wife of former Alabama men’s basketball coach Winfrey "Wimp" Sanderson, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. Born on November 19, 1938, in Florence, Alabama, Annette was a lifelong resident of the state. She attended Coffee High School, where she met Wimp; the couple married shortly after her graduation and enjoyed 67 years together.
Annette was a faithful Christian and a dedicated mother to three sons—Jim, Scott, and Barry—who followed in their father’s footsteps to become coaches themselves. Her family described her as the ultimate coach’s wife, offering unwavering support during both triumphs and challenges in their sports careers. In a heartfelt tribute, the University of Alabama men’s basketball program mourned her passing, noting her kindness and her role as a maternal figure to the athletes Wimp coached.
During her life, Annette briefly ventured into real estate before dedicating her time to supporting her family. Known for her vocal presence at games, she fondly reminisced about finding her husband’s signature plaid jackets. “I know the kind he likes,” she shared in a 1987 interview.
Beyond her family duties, Annette enjoyed playing tennis, reading, and hosting gatherings. Her obituary reflects on her vibrant spirit and love for life, stating, “She lived life fully and will be missed by many.”
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at University Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Florence City Cemetery. Annette is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, and brother, Presley Burch.
