Alabama’s ban on transgender treatment for minors upheld by 11th Circuit.

A federal appeals court has upheld Alabama’s ban on treating transgender minors with puberty blockers and hormones, despite strong opposition from families with transgender children. The law, which makes it a felony to provide such treatments to individuals under 19, has been deemed constitutional by the 11th U.S. Court of Appeals.

The decision, which was reached by a majority of judges, has sparked controversy and concern among advocates for transgender rights. Four judges dissented, calling the decision “wrong and dangerous” and highlighting the potential impact on modern medical treatments.

This ruling comes in the midst of a nationwide debate over laws restricting gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. Twenty-five states have implemented similar bans, with some facing legal challenges and others being allowed to go into effect.

Families with transgender children were hoping the 11th Circuit would block the Alabama law, but their request was denied. Despite this setback, their lawyers remain hopeful and determined to continue fighting against the law.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall praised the court’s decision, stating that it will protect children from “life-altering” procedures. The law not only prohibits puberty blockers and hormones but also bans gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

The plaintiffs’ lawyers have vowed to keep fighting against the law, arguing that it infringes on the rights of families to make medical decisions for their children. They believe that laws like this have no place in a free society and will continue to advocate for the well-being of transgender youth.
