The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for several counties in Alabama, including Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Walker, Blount, Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, and Randolph. The advisory is valid for Thursday between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., with temperatures as low as 34 degrees expected to result in frost formation.
Sensitive outdoor vegetation may be harmed by the frost, and plants left uncovered could be killed. The weather service advises taking steps to protect tender plants from the cold, such as covering them before sunset or moving them indoors if possible. Frost advisories are typically issued from May to October when temperatures, winds, and sky cover are favorable for frost development, with a temperature of 36 degrees or less being the most likely threshold.
The service also warns that severe frost could end the growing season, known as a ‘killing frost’. Advance Local Weather Alerts, a service provided by United Robots using machine learning to compile data from the National Weather Service, can provide up-to-date information on weather advisories like frost advisories. Residents in the affected counties are encouraged to take precautions and protect their plants from the potentially damaging effects of the frost.
