Alabama Nonprofits Concerned About SNAP Benefit Reductions in Proposed ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Concerns are mounting in Alabama as federal funding cuts to food assistance and healthcare loom, potentially triggered by President Trump’s proposed “Big Beautiful Bill.” Alabama Arise, alongside several nonprofits, warns that this legislation could drastically reduce or eliminate SNAP benefits, affecting hundreds of thousands of Alabamians who rely on these essential services.

Recent estimates indicate that if the bill passes, SNAP could face nearly $300 billion in cuts over the next decade, while shifting part of the financial burden to the state—potentially costing hundreds of millions. Currently, around 750,000 residents in Alabama depend on SNAP for their food security.

Latrell Clifford Wood, a Hunger Policy Advocate with Alabama Arise, emphasizes the dire implications of these cuts, stating, “It’s really daunting to think that we will lose one of the only solutions we have to hunger in a state that has one of the worst rates of food insecurity in the nation.” He raises concerns about families potentially going hungry while the focus appears to be on tax cuts for the wealthy.

The bill also has sparked apprehension among some Republicans, including Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor. He expressed his reservations about the financial burden it could impose on state resources, stating, “Everybody that’s going to be in state government is going to be concerned about it. I don’t know whether we can afford it or not.”

As Alabama Arise and other groups host town hall meetings across the state to raise awareness, the pressing question remains: what will happen to the most vulnerable residents if these crucial support systems are dismantled?
