Mass Shooting in Downtown Montgomery Leaves Two Dead, Dozens Injured
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A mass shooting in downtown Montgomery late Saturday night has resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals, including a teenager, and left a dozen others injured. The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bibb Street and Commerce Street when two groups exchanged gunfire amidst a crowd attending local events.
The deceased victims have been identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams, both believed to be Montgomery residents. Police reports indicate that at least one of the shootings may have been a targeted act, leading to chaotic scenes as others in the crowd pulled out weapons in response.
A total of 14 individuals sustained gunshot wounds, with five currently in critical condition. Notably, seven victims are under the age of 20, the youngest being just 16.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys expressed outrage over the reckless behavior exhibited during the incident, stating, “The people who did what they did did not care about the people around them.” He emphasized that despite the presence of five officers nearby, the quick escalation of violence rendered it difficult for law enforcement to intervene promptly.
In light of the shooting, a reward exceeding $50,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. Mayor Steven Reed voiced concerns about public safety, likening the chaotic scene to the “wild, wild west” and urging community members to assist in holding those responsible accountable.
