Alabama Firefighter Training Video with Man and Plunger Being Investigated for Inappropriateness

Decatur Fire & Rescue Chief Tracy Thornton has taken action after an inappropriate training exercise was discovered at the Alabama Fire College. The investigation began after a class of 21 recruits was sent home abruptly. A video showing a simulated medical emergency with a plunger protruding from a man’s backside was shared with DFR officials. Thornton called the exercise inappropriate and stated that it would not be permitted to happen again.

Three recruits dropped out last week, although it is unclear if it is related to the investigation. The Fire College had cleared the department of major charges, but minor changes needed to be made. Thornton stated that all firefighters in Alabama must be certified through the Fire College and follow approved curriculum.

The training center’s certification could be revoked by the Fire College. Interviews with recruits and staff have been conducted as part of the investigation process. The appeal hearing for a DFR lieutenant, Kevin Jackson, is also set to resume.

Thornton emphasized the importance of following the rules and regulations set by the Fire College and ensuring that all training exercises are appropriate. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be obtained to address any issues that may have occurred during the recruit training program.
