Shomari Figures, Democratic candidate for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, made a splash at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Figures spoke briefly but passionately about the importance of his district, his family’s legacy of activism, and the need to protect voting rights. He also highlighted a bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell that would restore federal oversight to state election law changes. Figures pledged that Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris would sign the bill into law if elected. In response, Caroleene Dobson’s campaign criticized Figures for not addressing issues such as inflation and immigration in his speech. With the general election approaching on Nov. 5, the race between Figures and Dobson is heating up. The registration deadline to vote is Oct. 21, with absentee ballot deadlines following shortly after. Figures’ speech at the DNC has put him in the national spotlight and has energized his supporters for the upcoming election. As the campaign continues, the people of Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District will have an important choice to make between two very different candidates with contrasting visions for the future.
