Alabama airports collectively receive $22 million in federal grants

Alabama airports are set to receive $22 million in federal grants to improve infrastructure such as runways, lighting, and taxiways. Huntsville International Airport and Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will receive the largest portions of this funding. HSV will receive $12.8 million for projects like shifting a taxiway and rehabilitating pavement and lighting. Birmingham will receive $6.9 million for taxiway rehabilitation and construction.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the importance of these grants in benefitting passengers in the long term. The remaining funds will be dispersed among 10 other airports in Alabama for projects like taxiway construction, rehabilitation, apron construction, hangar construction, lighting reconstruction, and temporary runway closure lighting.

Weedon Field in Eufaula will receive $667,080, Troy Municipal Airport will get $524,323, MacCrenshaw Memorial in Greenville will receive $332,786, Franklin Field in Union Springs will get $309,747, Tuscaloosa National will receive $164,270, and Gulf Shores International will receive $46,674.

The grants are part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program and are allocated based on passenger volume and capital improvement needs. These funds will allow airports across Alabama to make critical upgrades that will benefit passengers for years to come.
