The new helmet communication system had a rocky start at Bryant-Denny Stadium during the game between Alabama football and Western Kentucky. The NCAA recently allowed teams to use helmet communications, with one player on each side of the ball able to communicate with one coach. However, the system didn’t work for Western Kentucky at the beginning of the game, leading to Alabama also being unable to use their communication system. As a result, both teams had to resort to hand signals to communicate plays.
According to ESPN, the helmet communications started working after a few minutes. Alabama had been practicing and incorporating the system into their gameplay throughout the offseason, including using it in scrimmages. Despite the early setback, the team was able to adapt and continue with the game, relying on other methods of communication.
Nick Kelly, an Alabama beat writer for AL.com and the Alabama Media Group, highlighted the importance of the helmet communication system for the team. The introduction of this technology was intended to enhance communication on the field and streamline play-calling processes. While the initial issues at the beginning of the game caused a temporary setback, Alabama was able to quickly adjust and continue the game.
