Tuscaloosa will hold its first public 9/11 memorial event this year, the Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Coleman Coliseum. Organized by Alabama Athletics and the University of Alabama Police Department, the climb features 2,200 steps up and 2,200 down, equivalent to the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. A pre-climb ceremony starts at 7:45 a.m., with a climb for first responders at 8:15 a.m. and an open climb at 11:30 a.m. Participants can sign up at rolltide.com/form/119. The event honors the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists.
In conjunction with the climb, the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue is organizing a blood drive from Sept. 11-14, in partnership with the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Fire College, and NorthStar paramedics. The goal is to collect 110 blood or platelet donations in honor of the 441 first responders who lost their lives that day. The blood drive will take place at the Tuscaloosa Fire Administration Office on Greensboro Ave. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
