The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission has awarded two cultivator licenses, but the state’s rollout of medical marijuana remains on hold due to ongoing litigation. Some commission members are eager to resolve the legal issues and get medical marijuana to patients in need. A motion has been filed for a special master to help resolve the issue, but the likelihood of all parties agreeing to this is low. Despite the legal standstill, the commission awarded licenses to Pure by Sirmon Farms and Blackberrry Farms. The licenses will not be issued for about two weeks, and the cultivators will be unable to distribute the product until the integrator and dispensary licenses are resolved.
Commission members, including pharmacist Sam Blakemore, are open to all options to get medical marijuana to patients. They hope to issue at least one dispensary license by the end of the year to help alleviate the stress on patients. While the path to resolving the legal issues remains uncertain, they are committed to finding a solution that will allow patients to access the medication they need. The commission is permitted to issue up to 12 cultivator licenses, and they are hoping to make progress towards full implementation of the medical marijuana program in Alabama.
