Sen. Katie Britt Champions Support for Expectant Mothers with New Legislation
Washington, D.C. – In a determined effort to bolster support for mothers and pregnant women, U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has reintroduced the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) Act, just ahead of Mother’s Day. This legislation aims to create a comprehensive network of resources and support systems for expectant mothers, including a new website, Pregnancy.gov, which will offer public and private assistance options searchable by ZIP code.
Britt’s initiative highlights the importance of fostering a strong culture of life, emphasizing comprehensive support for families. “As a mom myself, I know the challenges other mothers face,” she stated. The proposed website will be managed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and will feature licensed child placement agencies alongside national funding options aimed at nonprofit and healthcare organizations providing pregnancy support.
Drawing from her own experiences raising two children, Britt is passionate about ensuring parents have the necessary resources to help their children thrive. The bill also establishes a grant program for nonprofits supporting women during and after pregnancy, with the stipulation that funds cannot be allocated to organizations involved in abortion services. Additionally, it proposes grants for telehealth capabilities in rural and underserved areas, improving prenatal and postnatal care access.
Despite facing opposition in the past—including concerns from Senate Democrats about privacy and tracking—Britt’s office has dispelled such claims, asserting that the proposed website would not collect personal information.
With Alabama reporting alarmingly high maternal mortality rates, the MOMS Act has garnered support from 21 Senate Republicans, underscoring a bipartisan commitment to improving maternal health and family support across the country. “I am committed to growing and strengthening families," Britt affirmed, "to ensure they can pursue their American Dream.”
