Major Highway Expansion Expected to Fuel Economic Growth in West Alabama | News

Highway Expansion Project Transforms West Alabama’s Economic Landscape

Demopolis, AL – After decades of dialogues and planning, a major highway expansion project is now underway in West Alabama, promising substantial economic impact. The expansion of U.S. Highway 43 and State Route 69 aims to create a 200-mile corridor linking Mobile and Tuscaloosa with a four-lane divided highway and five bypasses designed to redirect truck traffic away from town centers.

Senator Bobby Singleton emphasized the project’s significance: “It gives us an opportunity to compete and present a crown jewel to attract companies, enabling efficient transport of goods and services.” The construction phase is expected to create approximately 700 jobs, positioning Demopolis as the project’s operational hub, with a renovated grocery store serving as the field office for a team of 120 members.

Mayor Woody Collins expressed enthusiasm for the long-awaited development, noting, “We’ve fought hard for this for many years, and it’s finally coming to fruition. This shows the benefits of patience.” The construction is spearheaded by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) in collaboration with Brasfield & Gorrie. ALDOT’s Tony Harris highlighted the visible progress, stating, “We’re already under construction in Linden on the West Alabama highway, and by the end of summer, you’ll see additional phases of construction.”

The project includes building 23 new bridges, drainage systems, land clearings, utility relocations, and the installation of 100 box culverts. It received priority status due to the Rebuild Alabama Act passed in 2019, ensuring that this transformative infrastructure project is finally a reality for West Alabama’s future.
