James Spann: Alabama to experience calmer weather today, but stormy weekend on the horizon

After stormy weather in southeast Alabama, drier air and cooler temperatures are expected today with a freeze likely early Friday morning. Despite the cool start, Friday will have plenty of sunshine with highs ranging from 57 to 64 degrees.

However, the calm will be short-lived as a stormy weekend is on the horizon. Saturday will bring breezy and warmer conditions, with temperatures rising into the 70s. A dynamic system is forecasted to bring rain and storms by Saturday night, with an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms for western counties and a slight risk elsewhere. The main window for severe weather is predicted to be between 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.

Once the storm passes, Sunday will clear up with highs in the 60s. Next week is expected to bring another freeze early Monday and Tuesday, along with rain and a chance of light snow over north Alabama on Wednesday.

Looking back on this date in 2000, severe thunderstorms spawned tornadoes over southwestern Georgia, resulting in casualties and significant damages.
