Michigan man Demetrius Frazier was executed in Alabama for the rape and murder of a woman in 1991. Frazier was previously serving a life sentence in Alabama for killing a teenage girl. His mother and advocates pleaded to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to bring him back to his home state to serve his sentence, as Michigan does not have the death penalty. Whitmer expressed regret that her predecessor agreed to Frazier’s transfer to Alabama.
Frazier’s execution was carried out using nitrogen gas, the fourth in the nation to use this method. The Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey, stated that justice had been served for the victim, Pauline Brown. Frazier maintained his innocence and criticized the handling of the case.
Frazier’s execution through nitrogen gas was controversial, with defense attorneys arguing against the method. Some witnesses described Frazier quivering and shaking on the gurney during the execution. Despite this, a federal judge refused to block the execution.
Frazier’s family witnessed the execution but did not provide any statements to the media. Before his execution, Frazier spent time with his family and legal team, having his final meal from Taco Bell. Alabama became the first state to use nitrogen gas for executions, calling this method into question for future cases.
