Alabama Government Office Bomber Receives Nine-Year Federal Prison Sentence

Irondale Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Explosive Device Attack on Alabama Attorney General’s Office

MONTGOMERY, AL – Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, a 27-year-old Irondale resident, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for placing and detonating a shrapnel-filled explosive device near the Alabama Attorney General’s Office in Montgomery. Calvert confessed to manufacturing the explosive using nails and screws as shrapnel. After igniting the device, he fled the scene before it exploded, fortunately causing no injuries.

Prior to the explosion, Calvert had been seen placing stickers promoting Antifa in the vicinity, although he denied any affiliation with the group during his plea hearing. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the severity of Calvert’s actions, stating, “Acts of violence like this one against our public institutions endanger public servants and entire communities.” He praised the collaborative efforts of the FBI, ATF, and local law enforcement in investigating the incident.

FBI Director Chris Wray noted that the sentencing represents a commitment to justice, emphasizing the agency’s dedication to protecting communities from violence. Similarly, ATF Director Steven Dettelbach remarked that attacks on public officials and institutions will not be tolerated in the U.S.

Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson applauded the multi-agency cooperation that led to Calvert’s identification and prosecution, stating, “This prosecution would not have been possible without the coordinated efforts of numerous federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.”

The case highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain the safety of public institutions in Alabama. The sentencing serves as a reminder that such violent acts will be met with accountability.
