Tribute to Kelly Butler: Esteemed Former Finance Director Passes Away
Alabama mourns the loss of Kelly Butler, the former state finance director who dedicated nearly four decades to advising state leaders on fiscal matters. Butler, who resigned in 2021 after revealing his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), died on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of public service and mentorship.
Governor Kay Ivey reflected on Butler’s character, stating, “Kelly was the epitome of a public servant and a good man,” emphasizing his impactful presence even after his diagnosis. As finance director, a critical role in the governor’s cabinet, Butler managed the Alabama Department of Finance and played a key role during the distribution of federal COVID-19 relief funds in 2020 and 2021.
Senate General Fund budget committee chairman Sen. Greg Albritton called Butler a “friend and mentor,” highlighting the positive influence he had on many. Bill Poole, who succeeded Butler as finance director, noted the unprecedented outpouring of support upon Butler’s retirement, citing his leadership and compassion.
Colleagues, including Rep. Steve Clouse and Sen. Arthur Orr, praised Butler’s commitment to fiscal conservatism, which prioritized taxpayers’ interests. Clouse recounted productive winter meetings with Butler, who was known for his meticulous budget projections.
Assistant Finance Director Susan Wilhelm remembered Butler for his profound impact on those around him, stating he inspired others to achieve excellence in their work. “We are all lucky to have known and worked with him,” she expressed.
Butler’s contributions will be remembered by many, solidifying his legacy as a dedicated public servant. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
