Shomari Figures secures endorsement from Southern Poverty Law Center in AL-2 congressional race

Shomari Figures, a Democratic candidate running for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, has received the endorsement of the Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund. This comes after a federal court ruled that the previous congressional map unfairly diluted the voting power of Black Alabamians. Figures is facing off against Republican Caroleene Dobson in the upcoming election, with key endorsements on both sides.

The SPLC Action Fund also endorsed Cleo Fields, a Democratic candidate in Louisiana’s newly redrawn 6th Congressional District. Both candidates have the opportunity to make history by representing their communities in Congress.

The SPLC has long been involved in advocating for fair representation in government, and sees Figures and Fields as the candidates best equipped to bring about change in the Deep South. The organization, founded in 1971, has significant resources at its disposal and has been actively lobbying for voting rights and political representation.

Despite the redrawn district maps in both Alabama and Louisiana, Republicans are still expected to put up a fight in the upcoming election. Figures will need to win over undecided voters in order to secure victory. The general election is set for Nov. 5, with voter registration deadlines approaching.

Overall, the SPLC’s endorsement of Figures reflects a larger push for diversity and representation in politics, particularly in Southern states where Black voters have historically been disenfranchised. The upcoming election will be a key moment in determining the future of these districts and the representation of their constituents.
