Young Candidate Copeland Johnson Seeks Place 2 on Hoover City Council
Hoover, AL – Copeland Johnson, a 23-year-old pre-law student, has announced his candidacy for Place 2 on the Hoover City Council, aiming to bring a fresh and youthful perspective to local governance. Johnson emphasizes his commitment to improving stormwater management, public safety, support for small businesses, and increased funding for Hoover city schools.
Standing at nearly 7 feet tall, Johnson remarked he is ready to "stand tall for the city of Hoover." He believes that young voices, particularly those under 30, deserve representation and that age should not dictate the timing of one’s contributions to the community. “I shouldn’t have to wait until I’m 50 plus to be the future," he stated in an interview with AL.com. His deep-rooted connection to Hoover—from attending Church of the Highlands to enjoying events like Hoover Day—fuels his passion for the city.
A product of Hoover’s education system, Johnson’s leadership skills were honed during his time at Spain Park High School, where he was involved in mock trial and the Youth in Government program. He received a scholarship for art at the University of Alabama, where he is now advancing his studies in pre-law, preparing to leverage his academic expertise to address local challenges.
The upcoming municipal election for the Hoover City Council is set for August 26, 2025. Johnson’s candidacy follows the decision of incumbent Sam Swiney not to seek re-election. He faces established opponents, including sports hall of famer Kenneth Cox and former council president Gene Smith. Johnson is confident that his energy and innovative approach will resonate with voters. “Experience without energy doesn’t seem to have gotten the job done,” he asserted. “I consider myself the solution-oriented leader Hoover needs.”
