Guiding the Path to Enhanced Drying Technologies


The Center for Advanced Research in Drying (CARD) has previously explored various technologies for industrial drying, but is now focusing on lasers. Dr. Jamal Yagoobi, director of CARD, explains that lasers are a more energy-efficient option for drying materials in industries such as food and pulp and paper. Lasers can be easily integrated into existing production lines, reducing the need for costly retrofits. Additionally, lasers do not heat enclosed spaces like traditional drying methods, resulting in less energy loss.

IPG Photonics, a leading industrial laser manufacturer, is a member of CARD and will provide laser technology for the research. The project aims to develop energy-efficient drying processes that do not compromise product quality or significantly increase costs. Partner companies will play a crucial role in evaluating the effectiveness of laser drying on their products.

Dr. Yagoobi is excited about the project’s potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions by saving a substantial amount of energy annually. He also highlights the opportunity for WPI students to gain valuable research experience and potentially secure jobs with CARD companies. The project’s goal of making drying processes more efficient aligns with the growing demand for sustainable practices in energy-intensive industries.
