The Fargo Police Department has implemented new technology in the form of license plate readers and cameras across the city to prevent and solve crimes. The technology, provided by Flock Safety, alerts police when a vehicle or person suspected of a crime is captured. The system has already helped in solving over 50 cases, including identifying stolen vehicles, individuals on the terrorist watch list, and those with active warrants.
The technology, which cost about $116,000 and was obtained through grant funding, is part of a pilot program with plans to seek additional funding to integrate it with the department’s real-time crime center. Currently, the system is only used during large community events but the goal is to have it operational daily to better prevent and solve crimes.
Fargo Police Capt. Bill Ahlfeldt will present on the new technology at a City Commission meeting on Sept. 16. The department strategically placed the cameras in areas with higher calls for service or traffic to maximize results. The cameras have also been used to aid in locating missing persons.
Overall, the technology has proven to be beneficial in preventing and solving crimes, with the department looking to expand its use in the future. The initiative has been successful in improving community safety and gathering evidence for criminal cases.
