In a healthcare environment, evaluating vendors’ AI technologies within an AI governance framework is crucial for ensuring safe, effective, and ethical outcomes for patients. Glenn Wasson, administrator of analytics at UVA Health, stresses the importance of understanding and evaluating risks associated with AI systems, defining four categories of risk to assess potential issues. By establishing a robust governance framework, healthcare organizations can harness the benefits of AI systems while minimizing risk and maintaining public trust.
At the upcoming HIMSS25 educational session “Dear AI Vendors: This Is What We Need,” Wasson will address the need for increased transparency around data, algorithms, and workflows to highlight sources of risk and build provider confidence in AI tools. The session will focus on different use cases for AI within healthcare, such as diagnosis prediction, personalized medicine, staff scheduling, and cost reductions.
Attendees of Wasson’s session will leave with a deeper understanding of the unique aspects of AI system evaluation and a framework for engaging in a dialog between providers and vendors to understand risks and mitigations. The discussion will involve qualitative and quantitative answers, requiring input from a range of stakeholders including leaders and operators familiar with deployment environments and workflows.
Wasson’s session will take place at HIMSS25 on March 4 in Las Vegas. For more healthcare IT news and coverage, follow Bill Siwicki on LinkedIn or email him at bsiwicki@himss.org.
