SMART-TD Raises Concerns Over CSX’s Plans to Implement Automated Train Operations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – SMART-TD, the union representing railroad workers, is speaking out against CSX’s petition to the Federal Railroad Administration for approval of a new Trip Optimizer Air Brake Control system. CSX claims the system will reduce fuel consumption and emissions, but SMART-TD believes it is a cost-cutting measure that compromises safety.

The union has formed a committee to research and oppose CSX’s proposal, citing concerns over automation in railroading. The committee includes members from states with CSX operations as well as those without, highlighting the national safety issue posed by this technology.

While CSX and Wabtec, the company behind the system, argue that Trip Optimizer will improve efficiency and sustainability, SMART-TD warns that the system has a history of failures and flaws. The union believes that automation cannot replace the expertise and judgment of trained engineers and conductors.

CSX and Wabtec must prove that the Trip Optimizer system will not jeopardize safety before it can be approved by the FRA. SMART-TD is calling on all railroad workers to join them in opposing this proposal and protecting the integrity of their work.
