Alabama Journalism Icon Rubin E. Grant Passes Away at 68

Rubin E. Grant, a legendary figure in Alabama journalism and a celebrated member of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s "50 Legends," has died at the age of 68. Grant’s illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he reported on iconic sports figures from legendary football coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant to high school prodigies like Bo Jackson and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams.

After dedicating 25 years to covering minor-league baseball, Grant was honored with induction into the Birmingham Barons Hall of Fame. In 2021, he received the Mel Allen Media Award from the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his lifelong contributions to sports journalism. His earlier accolades include the prestigious Herby Kirby Award for Story of the Year in 1981, showcasing his impact on the sports narrative in Alabama.

For over two decades, Grant operated as a self-employed writer, contributing articles to various outlets including AL.com, The Birmingham News, and Lindy Sports Magazine, while also serving as a co-author for "Tales from Alabama Prep Football." His tenure at the Birmingham Post-Herald lasted 25 years, where he took on the role of prep editor, and he also worked briefly with the Hoover Gazette.

Grant, a graduate of the University of Alabama and the first Black sports editor of the university’s student newspaper, The Crimson White, was also recognized in 2002 with first place in the Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors Competition for his insightful columns on high school sports.
