As Hemp Ban Nears, Alabama Retailers Unite to Strategize Next Steps

Alabama Prepares for Controversial Ban on Smokable Hemp Products

As Alabama approaches the implementation of a controversial ban on smokable hemp products, residents and industry stakeholders are mobilizing to challenge the new law. Effective July 1st, the sale and possession of these products will be illegal following a recent vote by the state legislature.

In response to the impending ban, the Alabama Wellness Collective hosted a fundraising event on Friday night at Elysian Garden in Birmingham, aiming to finance a legal fight against the enforcement of the law. Activists are considering seeking an injunction to halt the ban, highlighting the profound impact it could have on both the local economy and public safety.

Noah Water, expansion manager of Gallery Smoke Brand, voiced concerns from his customers, including one who lamented, "If this happens, I’m going to have to go back to the street." Water emphasized that the ban could inadvertently foster a resurgence of the black market, as consumers who have chosen legal, tested products may be pushed back into illicit channels. "People were leaving the streets and coming to us because they wanted consistent testing and trusted products, but now that’s being taken away," he said.

The Birmingham event attracted dozens of retailers, processors, and growers, all expressing solidarity against the ban. Attendees shared their fears about job losses and economic downturns in the region, as well as concerns for public health and safety.

With just days remaining before the law takes effect, advocates remain determined to protect their rights and the livelihoods of those in the hemp industry, emphasizing the necessity for open dialogue and reconsideration of the legislation.
