The Pittsburgh Steelers have released cornerback Anthony Averett, dealing a setback to his comeback attempt in the NFL. Averett, a former Alabama player, had been on the rosters of the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions in 2023 but did not play in any regular-season games last year. He signed with the Steelers in May after attending their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
Averett played in two preseason games for the Steelers, recording three tackles and one pass breakup. He had also spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, where he moved into a starting role in 2021 due to injuries. Averett has played in 51 regular-season and three playoff games in his NFL career.
Injuries have plagued Averett throughout his career, including a broken thumb and broken toe in the 2022 season. He was released by the 49ers in August 2023 after being placed on injured reserve and later joined the Lions’ practice squad.
Despite his struggles with injuries, Averett remains determined to continue his NFL career and find a new team. His experience and versatility as a cornerback and free safety make him a valuable asset for any team willing to take a chance on him.
