Zelenskyy Seeks Truce, Plans Personal Meeting with Putin in Turkiye Amid Ongoing Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Zelenskyy Seeks Ceasefire as Russia Proposes Direct Talks in Istanbul

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his hope for a ceasefire with Russia, aimed to commence on Monday, expressing willingness to meet President Vladimir Putin in Turkey for direct peace negotiations. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s proposal for a 30-day unconditional truce, emphasizing that a full ceasefire must be established before meaningful discussions can begin.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy hailed Russia’s consideration of peace talks as a “positive sign,” but insisted that the first step in genuinely ending the conflict is a ceasefire, stressing the urgency of halting violence. He stated, “There is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day,” as Kyiv awaits confirmation from Moscow.

Conversely, Putin, responding to Zelenskyy’s ceasefire offer, suggested resuming negotiations without preconditions in Istanbul later this week. He implied that a ceasefire could be addressed during these talks, reflecting a tactical stance amid pressures from international leaders and former U.S. President Donald Trump, who supports immediate discussions to halt the violence.

Analysts describe Zelenskyy’s approach as a savvy political move that positions him as a proactive leader willing to negotiate, while simultaneously highlighting Russia’s potential reluctance to engage sincerely in peace efforts. European leaders, recently convened in Kyiv, voiced a unified call for a ceasefire, warning of increased pressure on Moscow if it diverges from this path.

As Turkey stands poised to mediate, its influential geopolitical role complicates the dynamics. Both sides are under scrutiny as the world watches closely for progress amidst a conflict that has escalated since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
