Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has praised the progress of his troops in the offensive into the Russian region of Kursk, stating that they are meeting their objectives. The operation, launched on August 6, aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks from Moscow. Zelenskiy’s remarks were supported by Ukraine’s top commander, Oleksandr Syrsky, who confirmed that new results were being achieved in the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian air force has targeted and damaged three bridges in the region, hindering Russian military logistics. Ukraine has captured more than 150 Russian prisoners of war, many of whom are young conscripts. The Institute for the Study of War reports that Ukraine’s operation in Kursk has advanced through 800 square kilometers over six days, with rapid progress following the deployment of Russian reinforcements to the area.
Despite these developments, Russian forces have taken control of the village of Svyrydonivka in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Moscow has denied reports that Ukraine’s attack on Kursk has derailed peace talks, with an aide to President Putin stating that Russia is not currently ready for negotiations. Ukraine’s air defense units successfully repelled a Russian drone attack on multiple cities, as the conflict continues to escalate.
As tensions rise, Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to visit Russia and Belarus this week, signaling Beijing’s close economic partnership with Moscow. China’s neutrality in the conflict has been highlighted, with the country refusing to provide lethal assistance to either side. Li Qiang’s visit to Belarus underscores the importance of bolstering ties with Beijing for Minsk’s security and economic support, particularly in the face of Western opposition.
