West Virginia AD Wren Baker Responds to SEC’s Shift to Nine-Game Schedule
Morgantown, WV – West Virginia Athletic Director Wren Baker has expressed no surprise at the SEC’s decision to implement a nine-game conference schedule starting in 2026. This change is expected to have significant implications for the Mountaineers’ future matchups, particularly as they gear up for a home-and-home series with Alabama. The Crimson Tide are set to visit Morgantown on September 5, 2026, with the Mountaineers traveling to Alabama the following year.
Despite the potential scheduling conflicts, Baker has proactively engaged in discussions with various opponents throughout the spring and summer. He emphasized the importance of maintaining stability within the non-conference slate, indicating that solidifying matchups will be a priority. "We don’t want any instability in our non-conference schedule," he stated.
Baker has long advocated for a balanced schedule, suggesting that with nine league games against formidable opponents, a single non-conference game is ideal. He noted that the SEC’s new scheduling approach might prompt further dialogue regarding non-conference opportunities.
Additionally, in light of comments from Pittsburgh Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi advocating for an annual matchup, Baker revealed his efforts to extend the Backyard Brawl series. "I had reached out to the athletic director at Pitt to extend the series, and they were aware of our intent," he said, responding to recent interest in renewing the rivalry.
As the 2026 season approaches, Mountaineers fans can expect ongoing developments related to their football schedule, especially as West Virginia aims to strengthen its competitive framework.
