Would Tuberville’s Election as Governor Bring Alabama Closer to Establishing a Lottery?

Sen. Tommy Tuberville Discusses Governor Run in Interview with Alabama Public Television

In a recent interview with Alabama Public Television’s Capitol Journal, Sen. Tommy Tuberville outlined his vision for Alabama as he considers a gubernatorial run. The interview will air Friday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at noon. Tuberville emphasized his priority of reducing business regulations and lowering taxes to invigorate the state’s economy.

Regarding the contentious issues of a lottery and expanded legal gambling in Alabama, Tuberville stated he does not intend to play an active role, insisting that the decision should rest with the voters and the Legislature. "The governor shouldn’t have anything to say with that," he remarked, emphasizing that any gambling legislation requires a constitutional amendment, which demands voter approval.

Current Governor Kay Ivey has been actively involved in the gambling debate, having appointed a study group to analyze the implications of expanded gambling in the state. In 2024, she supported initiatives allowing voters to decide on a lottery, sports betting, and casino operations. While a comprehensive gambling bill passed in the Alabama House, it ultimately failed in the Senate by a narrow vote. This year, Sen. Greg Albritton’s attempts to introduce a gambling bill were unsuccessful, and voters have not weighed in on a lottery proposal since 1999.

Tuberville’s stance and the broader gambling discourse continue to evolve, marking significant moments in Alabama’s political landscape as the state grapples with the economic ramifications of such legislation. As the 2024 gubernatorial race approaches, Tuberville’s insights into these issues will likely be a focal point for both supporters and opponents alike.
