Boeing factory workers in Seattle held a rally demanding better wages and pension benefits, putting pressure on new CEO Kelly Ortberg to end a strike that has worsened the company’s financial crisis. Despite recent job cuts, workers are determined to fight for higher wages. Washington state Congressional Democrats have called on both sides to reach a mutually beneficial deal. The strike, involving 33,000 unionized workers, began in September. Boeing has announced financial measures to ease its Wall Street situation, including stock and debt offerings, as well as a credit agreement. Both Boeing and the workers’ union have accused each other of unfair labor practices, leading to a breakdown in negotiations. Federal mediators have been involved in talks to try to resolve the strike. IAM members have been picketing Boeing sites and calling on Ortberg to join negotiations. Job cuts are expected in November and December, but striking workers are not currently affected. Boeing’s shares have dropped significantly since issues with the 737 MAX aircraft. The rally in Seattle aimed to show unity and strength in the face of the ongoing strike.
