Woman kidnapped 25 years ago as a toddler found by Connecticut police

Connecticut police have found a woman, Andrea Michelle Reyes, who was kidnapped 25 years ago from New Haven as a toddler, in Mexico. She was taken from her mother, Rosa Tenorio, who did not have custody of her, in October 1999 when she was almost 2 years old. A felony arrest warrant was issued for Rosa, and she was suspected to have fled with Andrea to Mexico. Despite her father’s efforts to find her, Andrea’s case went cold until 2023 when Detective Kealyn Nivakoff reinvestigated the case. Using interviews, search warrants, and social media, Nivakoff located Andrea, now in her 20s, in Puebla, Mexico.

DNA testing confirmed the relationship between Andrea and her father, leading to their emotional reunion after almost 25 years. Andrea’s father’s identity has not been released for privacy reasons. The case highlights the dedication of the New Haven Police Department in solving cold cases. The warrant for Rosa is still valid within the United States, and police believe she is still living in Mexico.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children had released a post about Andrea years ago, describing her and seeking information on her whereabouts. The case shows that even when leads are exhausted, cold cases can be resolved with continued effort and dedication. Chief Karl Jacobson emphasized the commitment of the police department to solving every cold case, like Andrea’s, no matter how much time has passed.
