Witness claims to have seen missing Pitt student rescued by powerful wave before disappearing

Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, went missing while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. A man who claims to have rescued her from drowning before she disappeared is considered a “person of interest” by authorities. Konanki was last seen at the beach with friends in Punta Cana. The man, who used to work as a lifeguard, said he and Konanki were swept out to sea by a wave but managed to get back to shore. He last saw her when he thought she had left the beach. Konanki’s disappearance has prompted a search effort by various institutions, including Dominican and U.S. authorities. Konanki’s family and local authorities from her home state of Virginia are also involved in the investigation. The man has been interviewed extensively by authorities and has cooperated. Dominican authorities do not consider anyone a suspect at this time, and U.S. authorities have classified this as a missing person’s case rather than a criminal matter. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has sent detectives to assist with the U.S. side of the investigation. Overall, the case of Sudiksha Konanki’s disappearance remains ongoing and is being pursued by multiple agencies to determine her whereabouts.
