Recent research highlights the effectiveness of the MIND diet in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, even when adopted in later life. A study presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual meeting involved nearly 93,000 middle-aged and older adults and showed that those who adhered to the MIND diet—combining elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets—had a reduced risk of dementia. This dietary pattern emphasizes the consumption of green leafy vegetables, berries, whole grains, and olive oil, particularly highlighting the role of berries in promoting brain health.

Lead researcher Song-Yi Park from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa noted that improving dietary habits can significantly aid older adults in preventing dementia, indicating that it’s never too late to make healthy changes. Participants in the study were assessed through a scoring system based on food intake, with higher scores correlating to a greater reduction (up to 25%) in dementia risk for those who improved their adherence over ten years.

The research utilized data from the Multiethnic Cohort Study, which included diverse racial and ethnic groups. It found a 9% reduced risk of dementia for those with higher MIND adherence, with variations based on ethnicity. While the study suggests promising links between the MIND diet and brain health, it’s essential to note that it establishes correlation rather than causation.

Experts, including Dr. Walter Willett, affirm that the findings support the broader benefits of Mediterranean diets. The MIND diet encourages dietary diversity and is also associated with lower risks of other chronic diseases, underscoring its potential health benefits beyond cognitive decline.
