University of Alabama’s Commencement: From Controversial Speech to Trump’s Visit
Tuscaloosa, AL — The University of Alabama is bracing for a politically charged graduation weekend as President Donald Trump is set to address the class of 2025, marking a significant return of speeches at the main commencement ceremony after a long hiatus.
In May 2007, Jim Stephens stirred reactions as he spoke out against the Iraq War during a similar ceremony. As a former soldier and chairman of EBSCO Industries, Stephens highlighted the humanitarian costs of war, asking graduates to reflect on the moral implications of U.S. military actions abroad. His remarks, particularly the day’s civilian casualties in Iraq, drew mixed responses from the audience, with some considering booing. The backlash prompted the university to forgo traditional commencement speakers in favor of simply naming graduates.
This year, however, the political landscape is again front and center as Trump’s visit has ignited opposition from local activists. The state’s NAACP and the university’s College Democrats are organizing a counter-rally dubbed "Tide Against Trump," featuring notable speakers like former Sen. Doug Jones and Beto O’Rourke. An online petition against Trump’s address has garnered over 25,000 signatures, showcasing the charged atmosphere surrounding his appearance.
Reflecting on his historic speech, Stephens, now 86, expressed satisfaction with the discussions it sparked, emphasizing the importance of critical citizenship. Daniel Maguire, a 2007 graduate who initially disapproved of Stephens’ comments, has since reconsidered his stance, acknowledging the value of addressing global issues during significant events like graduations.
With over 6,000 students expected to graduate this weekend, the University of Alabama’s ceremonies will once again embody the intersection of education and political discourse, as opinions from both sides of the aisle collide.
